Parcels packing, the most important fact for manies of us ! Many problems during the transport of parcels (damage, breakage, loss, addressing errors) result from poorly adapted or badly made packaging. Delivery is a crucial stage for the customer, whether a private or professional customer, it is the first impression he will retain of his purchase from your company.
Here are a few tips for your parcels packaging.  And have a good brand image with your consumers

Why is successful packaging so important?
– The packaging of yours parcels is made to protect your goods until they reach their destination;
– Packaging is also the first physical contact of your brand with your customer.

First step : Choosing the right packaging

First of all, it is essential to choose a suitable packaging to protect your shipment properly.
The packaging must be sufficiently rigid and strong to withstand transport.

Up to 30 kg, a double flute is sufficient. Above that and up to 70 kg, opt for a heavy quality triple flute. Finally, above 70 kg, you go to the pallet and it’s no longer for My Flying Box

💡 As a reminder, My Flying Box sends parcels up to 70kg!

What about the old packaging?

Avoid reusing them too often. Indeed, as they lose a little more rigidity with each transport, used cardboard boxes are less effective in protecting your goods.
With your package well packed, we can take the next step.

Second step : properly stowing your merchandise

Once you have found the packaging, you need to make sure that the contents of your box are well secured. This is where the « filling » plays its role.

To protect your goods in the package, use materials such as: kraft paper, bubble wrap, foam paper, newspaper, fabric, polystyrene mini chips, air cushions or any other cushioning material. If your business is the circular economy (see our article on e-commerce trends 2021) and you still have the original packaging for your item, that’s even better! Make a gesture for the planet by using it. If you don’t, don’t worry, get professional quality protective and cushioning material from your usual supplier.

If you have several objects in the same box, place the heaviest one at the bottom of the box and divide the rest. Make sure that you do not put two fragile objects in contact in the same package.

💡 Please note that the « fragile » label is usually unnecessary: as transport is often mechanised, the machines will only scan the information on the transport label.

💡 The delicate art of sending bottles Bottles are the goods most affected by damage. They must be placed in separate compartments and their packaging must be approved by the carrier. By using any other type of packaging for this kind of parcels, you expose yourself to a high risk of damage and a refusal to accept a refund from the transport service provider for your shipment.

Third step : Close your parcel securely

Properly sealed packaging will better protect your products during transport. If you want your parcel to be closed properly, it is best to use large special packing tape, brown or transparent adhesive tape of good quality (the same one you used during your last move!). Don’t hesitate to use any type of adhesive tape, as long as it is wide and strong, in the Ideal 5mm width.

the H-method

My Flying Box recommends the H-shaped method, suitable for all types of parcels, fragile or not: place the tape along the entire length of the box at the top and bottom, as well as at the 4 ends. If your parcel is poorly closed and opens during shipment, the carrier will under no circumstances assume responsibility for the loss or breakage of your shipment.

Furthermore, so as not to hinder transport, nothing must protrude: handles, string and kraft are forbidden as these elements could hinder the transport of your parcel (DPD and Colissimo refuse this type of packaging).

That’s it! Your box is now ready to be labelled and sent.

Last step : the dispatch note

In order for your parcel to be delivered to its destination, it must have a legible label. Check that it is printed and attached properly: its barcode must be perfectly legible. Stick it on the top of the parcel, never at an angle so as not to cut the barcode. Also remove all old labels to avoid any confusion!

💡 The use of plastic sleeves can be a plus because they guarantee the protection of your label and the documents that can be attached to the shipment (invoices, description of the contents if necessary …).

If the routing of your parcel is mechanised, your shipment is also handled at certain stages… even if only at the time of delivery (we are not yet at Mode de livraisons du futur in reference to our blog article).!

My Flying Box recommends that you write the addresses, the recipient’s address and the sender’s address on your parcel. If the label comes off, this information may enable the carrier to locate the parcel. This information must be clear and legible. Approximations and erroneous or incomplete information on the address may also cause delays in delivery without engaging the responsibility of the carrier.

🌍 Eco-responsible alternatives for your parcels packaging 🌍

In our article of the month on E-commerce: Trends to watch for 2021!, I am referring to the importance for e-merchants to take an ethical and sustainable turn, particularly in terms of transport and packaging.

Today, 55% of French people say they are concerned about plastic packaging, which is a major contributor to the carbon footprint.(Observatoire société et consommation, 2019). Most are willing to pay a little more for eco-friendly containers. 90% of French people are in favour of a company’s eco-responsible actions and more than half of consumers today say that the recyclability, durability and biodegradability of packaging are important factors in their purchasing decisions.

💡 Find boxes that « fit » the dimensions of your products. By adapting the size of your products as much as possible, you will reduce the weight and volume of your parcels, reduce your transport costs and reduce your carbon impact. As my college math teacher, QED, used to say.

💡 Some carriers charge by volumetric weight: the weight of your parcel will be calculated on the basis of its volume and not its weight. In this case, reduce the volume of your shipment by dividing your items into several small parcels.

To sum up, the success of the delivery does not only depend on the carrier but also on the preparation of the packages and their packaging (on your side): this preparation will be decisive when the trust your customers will place in you.
More than 70% of consumers consider that the packaging reflects the quality of the material purchased and therefore the image of the seller.
